PM’s Mann Ki Baat: Promote domestic tourism, learn about local destinations

Indians needed to inculcate better understanding of local destinations to appreciate the inherent diversity therein, said the PM in his recent edition of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio address to the nation.

In his address to the nation, in his regularly broadcasted ‘Maan Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed dismay over growing “glitter” for international destinations, while destinations in the country and diversity within them were going largely unnoticed. “It is a matter of concern when we do not see our own country, we do not know about its diversities nor do we understand them. Impressed by mere superficial glitter, we have started enjoying touring foreign countries,” he said in his radio address to the nation. Clarifying that he had no issues if one travelled around the world, he, however, appealed, saying “but have a look at your own country too.”

Making a pitch for stronger community participation to better project India in the global marketplace, the PM said, “in order to promote tourism, every Indian must know about the best tourist destinations in your state.” He argued that travelling extensively helped develop better understanding of the country and its diversity, noting that “Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilak and Swami Vivekananda travelled widely in India. This developed their understanding of the country.”

PM’s address reaffirms our belief that tourism is an enabler. It cements people-to-people contact and helps communities better appreciate the diversity of the country. Therefore, it is imperative that conditions favourable for tourism and travelled be developed as a national priority. It will not only aid in employment generation but stem some of cultural and social tussles prevalent in the society. Prime Minster Modi’s message hits all the right notes.
